Trying a Bob’s Burgers Recipe

The whole promotions department started singing The Final Count Down when I found this image twice

I love Bob’s Burgers. It’s hard not to. The family dynamics, the burgers, Tina. It’s a wacky show that has a little bit for everyone!

Like many of you, some of my favorite moments are when we get to see the special of the day.

But have you ever wondered what one of Bob’s burgers actually tasted like?

With names like The Final Kraut Down and the Meat-siah, my culinary curiosity was driving me crazy!

Luckily for me, my curiosity was laid to rest with the discovery of The Bob’s Burgers Burger Book: Real Recipes for Joke Burgers.

Reading the top comment on Amazon, this book is clearly worth its weight in gold.

I’m going to start with the burger that brie-gan it all for young Bob Belcher, the Baby You Can Chive My Car burger. It’s one of the easiest, and in my biased opinion, one of the best in The Bob’s Burgers Burger Book.

So let’s chive-in and make a burger!

What you’ll need:

And buns dont forget the buns

-Making Fried Pickles-

Combine the flour, Cajun seasoning, and about a teaspoon of salt in a shallow bowl. In a separate bowl, beat that egg.

Pat dry your pickle slices to prepare them for their crispy fate.  Dip the pickles into the dry mixture first, then into the egg, and back to the flour. Set the breaded pickles onto a plate and prep your oil. ** You can add buttermilk or milk to the egg for flavor, but this is totally optional.**

Heat about two-three cups of oil in a pan until glistening, about 350° F. I prefer using an oil that has a higher smoke-point, such as Canola or Sunflower oil, but really any fry oil will do fine.

Drop your pickles slices in gently so that you don’t burn yourself, then agitate  with a spatula so they don’t stick together.

Once the pickles look to be golden brown and crispy, remove from heat and drain on some paper towels. Get ready to grab your meat.

-Feta Stuffed Burgers-

Burgers (to me) taste better when I remove the air of mystery about them. Grinding my own meat or having a butcher grind it for me removes all uncertainty about what cut of the cow I am actually eating.

A great meat grinding method is to cube some cheap cuts of beef into about 1 inch pieces and  put into the freezer for about 15 minutes, or until they firm up a bit. Throw them into a food processor and pulse until you get a nice, pebble-like grind.

This method makes for nice, juicy burgers but is also really optional.

Flatten a fistful of ground beef into two thin pucks. Do this thinner than you think you’ll need. Between the two thin patties, we are going to layer some crumbled feta, then pinch the edges together to form a nice thick burger patty. Before you go too cook it,  I recommend creating a divot in the raw patty starting from the middle to about half an inch from the edge. This will prevent the burger from becoming a ball once it’s cooked.

If you don’t have a grill, heat some oil in a cast iron pan. Cook the patty a few minutes on each side until you reach your desired done-ness and the fire alarm has gone off at least twice. **Caution, cooking this inside can get smokey**

-The Sauce-

Best part of this burger is the sour cream sauce. You could put this on ANYTHING and it would be tasty. Use it as a dip for fries, or put it on a turkey sandwich. It’s the perfect blend of creamy and tangy. Maybe… avoid as an ice cream topping.

Mix together the sour cream and mustard and sprinkle in chives to taste. The recipe calls for half a cup of finely chopped chives. That is a LOT of chives. Follow your taste buds and don’t punish yourself with chives.

-The Construction-

Toast your fancy buns (ciabatta or otherwise) in some oil on the skillet. Layer your stuffed feta patty and a healthy smear of the sour cream sauce, and stick your fried pickles to the sides with some toothpicks to form a little burger car. Beeps and honks are optional.

This burger is just great, and makes me eager to try more Bob’s Burgers recipes. If you are feeling lazy and don’t want to fry the pickles, try adding some crispy bacon instead. But, when all is said and done this is a burger that tastes best without the works.

Happy eating! Be sure to check out Bob’s Burgers Sundays on FOX for more great burger recipes!
