COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – An Emergency Declaration will be requested after a devastating fire destroyed millions of dollars worth of vehicles and police equipment at a building owned by the Coeur d’Alene Police Department (CdA PD).

The fire happened on June 9. No one was injured in the fire, but everything inside the large building was lost.

The building was the home of many divisions, including Code Enforcement, Animal Control and the department’s Information Technology Division.

Police lost about 10 vehicles, including an incident SWAT BearCat armored unit, nearly 100 laptops, E-Bikes and everything associated with its canine program.

The Emergency Declaration request will go to the City Council when it meets Tuesday.

The declaration would clear the way for the emergency expenditure of public money to replace the building and equipment destroyed by the fire.

“My position is one of strong support. As you know, I’m a retired police officer for the City of Coeur d’Alene. And the fire that occurred has just decimated really critical equipment. So, Council does need to take action,” City Councilwoman Christie Wood, said.

CDA PD told NonStop Local they could not comment on their Emergency Declaration request ahead of the meeting.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but police said they do believe it was an accident.
