Andy Kim wins New Jersey Democratic Senate primary for indicted Bob Menendez’s seat

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Democratic Rep. Andy Kim has won New Jersey’s Senate primary. He will be in a favorable position for the general election in the blue-leaning state as Democrats seek to keep control of a narrowly divided Senate. His victory pushes indicted Sen. Bob Menendez to the sidelines of the Democratic Party after five decades in state politics. Menendez has filed to run as an independent in November, though the outcome of his trial and how that could affect the race aren’t clear. Kim’s win comes after a bruising start to the primary, when a battle between him and New Jersey first lady Tammy Murphy began to take shape. Murphy, a first-time candidate and the spouse of Gov. Phil Murphy, bowed out of the contest.
