ASHFORD, Wash. – The search for two missing Navy aviators has intensified as Army special forces have joined the efforts. The aviators have been missing since their jet crashed on Tuesday in a heavily wooded area east of Mount Rainier.
Authorities located the wreckage of the two-person fighter jet at an altitude of 6,000 feet. The challenging terrain makes it difficult for rescuers to reach the site on foot.
Investigators have yet to confirm if the crew ejected from the plane before the crash. There is a possibility that the aviators might still be inside the wreckage.
The Army unit involved in the search brings expertise in mountaineering, high angle rescue, and technical skills essential to navigate the steep and remote area.
