Bear seen near Mead High School

SPOKANE, Wash. – A bear was spotted about a mile from Mead High School this morning.

A science teacher at Mead High saw the bear and captured video of what appears to be a black bear walking near a building.

Todd Zeidler, a public information officer with Mead School District, says that educators are aware of the large mammal.

“We are aware of this situation and are contacting Fish and Wildlife to make them aware. We are also letting our bus drivers know to keep an eye out,” Zeidler said.

According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) black bears rarely pose a danger to humans, but anyone who sees a bear should exercise caution and take responsible measures to leave the area.

“As human populations encroach on bear habitat[s], people and bears have greater chances of encountering each other. Bears usually avoid people, but conflicts can arise especially when black bears become habituated to human-provided food sources,” WDFW’s website states.

Do not approach a bear or moose if you see one. Additional information on bear encounters can be found here.
