SPOKANE, Wash. – The Big Brothers Big Sisters of the inland northwest is attempting to raise $40,000 and find 40 new mentors in June.
Some kids waiting for a big brother or sister have been on the waitlist for more than a year.
Kyle West, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the inland northwest, said that the organization is in a position now to expand its services and that June is a critical time for the kids in the program as school is letting out.
Lamar Lewis signed up to be a big brother in 2018 and has been matched with LawRon for more than five years. He is passionate about the opportunity to step up as a mentor.
“There’s a lot of kids in Spokane and all throughout that, that’s their situation, they don’t have a stable parent, they don’t have someone showing them the right way. So to be able to do that for somebody is pretty darn cool,” Lewis said.
Tricia Wisner matched with her little sister Hopie in 2017 and said becoming a big sister was one of her best decisions ever.
“Definitely worth it. Because of how you feel in giving back, of course, but also in how much they give to you,” Wisner said.
Those interested in donating can go to the Big Brothers Big Sisters website to give and sign up as a mentor. Nonstop Local will hold a connect center on Saturday, June 1st, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. to help raise money for the organization. The number to call is 509-443-1111.
