SPOKANE, Wash. – Bishop Thomas Daly, the leader of the Diocese of Spokane and a prominent member of the United States Committee of Catholic Bishops, condemned political violence after an attempted assassination
In a statement posted to the diocese’s website, Daly said he was praying for the victims of the violence and called for calm ahead of the November election.
“I condemn the political violence that occurred with Saturday’s shooting, killing one person and injuring President Donald Trump and other bystanders,” Daly said.
Daly, who has been critical of racial justice movements and LGBTQ+ people but leads a diocese of Catholics with varying political affiliations, cited scripture when calling for unity amidst political divisions.
“Whether one prefers to support President Trump, President Biden, or any other candidate, no disagreement toward another should end in violence. As Catholics and as Americans, ‘Let us then pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.’ (Rm. 14:19),” Daly said.
Leaders from both major political parties over the weekend and called for calm.
Catholic candidates will appear on both the Democratic and Republican tickets this year, as both Joe Biden and JD Vance regularly discuss their faith as a formative part of their backgrounds.
