SPOKANE, Wash. – Attorney General Bob Ferguson (D) slammed fellow gubernatorial candidate Dave Reichert (R) after Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels endorsed the Republican candidate.
Ferguson focused on a 2019 incident during which Nowels, then serving as an undersheriff, made a joke about killing ex-wives.
According to The Spokesman Review, Nowels received a four week unpaid suspension for the comments and apologized.
Ferguson argued that the endorsement reflects poorly upon Reichert in a Thursday social media post.
“It’s been 4 weeks, and anti-choice Republican Congressman Dave Reichert still lists on his website the endorsement of someone who ‘joked’ about killing ex-wives,” Ferguson said.
NonStop Local has reached out to the Reichert campaign for comment.
Reichert is a former King County Sheriff with strong ties to Washington’s policing institutions. In addition to Nowels’ support, he has received endorsements from nearly 30 county sheriffs around the Evergreen State.
