EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon State Police have released body camera footage from the April 23 chase of suspected double-murderer and former Yakima Police officer Elias Huizar and eventual rescue of his son that he had kidnapped.
The footage shows Oregon State Troopers finding Huizar’s car on southbound I-5 near Eugene at 2:37 p.m., sparking a 22-minute chase in which he shot at responding troopers and crashed.
Several law enforcement officers arrived at the crash and later found Huizar dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The child was safely brought out of the car and brought to the Springfield Patrol Office.
OSP says on June 6, the Linn County District Attorney stated in a determination that Huizar had presented “an imminent and immediate threat to life and the use of deadly force was clearly legally justified.”
The full video of the body camera footage can be found on OSP’s YouTube channel. The video contains graphic audio and footage of intense situations.
