BOISE, Idaho – Boise State University has decided to withdraw from the Mountain West women’s volleyball tournament despite securing a spot in the semifinals against the Spartans.
The team has not disclosed the reason for this decision but released the following statement.
“The decision to not continue to play in the 2024 Mountain West Volleyball Championship tournament was not an easy one. Our team overcame forfeitures to earn a spot in the tournament field and fought for the win over Utah State in the first round on Wednesday. They should not have to forgo this opportunity while waiting for a more thoughtful and better system that serves all athletes,” the University said.
The statement follows a federal lawsuit involving a dozen plaintiffs, including two Boise State volleyball players, against transgender athletes participating in sports.
The controversy centers on a transgender woman playing for the San Jose State University women’s volleyball team. The plaintiffs are seeking to have this player declared ineligible for the conference tournament.
The lawsuit also targets the Mountain West Conference, claiming it quietly adopted a transgender athletics policy on the same day Boise State announced its decision not to play against San Jose State.
This will count as the seventh forfeit victory for San Jose State.
This situation has sparked discussions about the inclusion of transgender athletes in collegiate sports and the policies surrounding their participation.
