ATHOL, Idaho — The bridge on Brunner Road over U.S. 95 near Silverwood Theme Park will undergo a lengthy closure in the westbound lane for repairs after being struck by an oversized trailer load.
According to the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), an excavator being hauled on a large semi-trailer was not properly secured, causing it to exceed the posted height clearance and strike the Brunner Bridge as the truck passed beneath.
ITD said an inspection was started at the scene, and the westbound outer lane of the bridge will remain closed for the rest of the winter to prevent load restrictions on the entire structure. However, one lane in each direction will remain open for travel, according to the department.
ITD crews said that they will also conduct weekly inspections of the damaged areas to ensure the bridge remains safe for travelers on both Brunner Road and U.S. 95 below.
The driver responsible for the incident was located and cited by law enforcement. ITD said they will also work with insurance companies to recover repair costs.
