Central Valley School Board considers letter on transgender athletes

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. – The Central Valley School Board has voted to consider a new letter addressing the participation of transgender athletes in high school sports.

Current Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) rules allow transgender athletes to participate on teams that match their gender identity.

The board’s decision followed over an hour of public comment, six resolution amendments, and board member discussions. The proposed letter urges state lawmakers to adopt legislation protecting sports for biological females. It also suggests creating a third sports category where anyone could compete.

The community expressed concerns about safety and fairness, reflecting differing opinions on the issue. Some view the proposal as discriminatory, while others support transgender athletes’ inclusion.

Board members acknowledged that the letter will not change state law but aims to give the district a voice to state lawmakers.

The board commended the large audience for remaining civil during the discussion, emphasizing the importance of listening to diverse perspectives.
