Charges filed against Spokane County deputy for alleged assault

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The Yakima County Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against Spokane County deputy Sgt. Clay Hilton, who is accused of beating a man in a park last year.

According to Hinton, who is now suing Spokane County and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office for civil rights violations, Hilton approached him while he was parked in the park late at night. Hinton, who was resting before continuing his drive to Colfax, was informed by Hilton that parking in that area was illegal. When Hinton refused to provide identification, he was allegedly arrested with excessive force, resulting in eight shattered ribs and a punctured lung.

Hinton’s attorneys claim that the Spokane County Jail refused to book him for resisting arrest. Hilton reportedly stated that he detected the smell of marijuana and saw a knife in Hinton’s car.
