Chick-fil-A plans for Logan neighborhood, stirs debate

SPOKANE, Wash. – A new Chick-fil-A restaurant is one step closer to being built in Spokane’s Logan neighborhood. City documents indicate that the proposed project would not pose any significant environmental concerns.

The plan involves merging two parcels of land currently separated by an alley. This would require demolishing a series of abandoned houses along the corner of Ruby and Mission.

“These houses back here, it looks like life has aged them a bit,” lifelong Spokanite James Woods said. “I remember as a kid, these actually used to be houses and a business that was there.”

Realtor Alyssa Curnutt emphasized the significance of the new development.

“A new Chick-fil-A is a really, really big deal. People care about that in Spokane for sure,” Curnutt said. ” It’s promising that something good is going to happen in this area.”

However, the project is still in its early stages. The developer has not yet submitted a building permit, and the plans to demolish the old buildings are still preliminary.

Woods questions the necessity of another fast-food restaurant in the area. Woods pointed out Jimmy Johns, Subway, Zips, Sonic and Houston TX Hot Chicken are all within a block.

“Some of these places could be fixed up and used for housing for people who need either emergency housing,” Woods said. “I think that’s a better use for property than just another Chicken shack.”

Spokane City Council will have the final say on the project’s approval. If the developer proceeds, the council will review the proposal and hold a public hearing.
