City of Spokane to install motion-activated lights to curb nighttime crime

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane plans to roll out motion-activated floodlights in an effort to reduce nighttime crime. These lights will be installed on residential properties that have been the site of previous crimes and those in high crime areas.

The program is backed by $150,000 from Spokane’s COVID-19 federal relief funds. The funds must be allocated by the end of this year.

The city will use data from the streets receiving the lights and property crime reports to ensure the installations target the most needed areas. There are also plans to explore solar or battery-powered lights for locations without city power, according to Avista.

More information about the program and how residents can access it is expected by the end of the year, said Spokane’s Public Works Director.
