City of Spokane’s water supply meets federal standards, faces PFAS concerns

SPOKANE, Wash. – The City of Spokane released the annual municipal drinking water quality report on Friday. It shows that Spokane meets federal drinking water standards and is responding to PFAS concerns.

According to the city, Spokane’s water supply remains clean and affordable despite concerns that polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), sometimes called ‘forever chemicals,’ could endanger local water sources.

“As we see more contaminants enter the environment, our commitment to protect our drinking water remains our strongest priority,” Director of Public Works Marlene Feist said.

Forever chemicals were detected in the city’s water supply in April 2023, and the city signed on to a lawsuit against several companies that allegedly produced the chemicals in April 2024. According to the city, additional measures are in place to detect PFAS.

“The City has implemented updated testing and monitoring procedures for these contaminants,” the city government said on Monday.
