Climber rescued, another dies in Harrison Peak search operation

HARRISON PEAK, Wash. — One person was rescued and another died over the weekend, according to the Boundary Search and Dive Rescue Team (BSDRT).

BSDRT began search efforts Friday evening after receiving reports of a missing climber, Christian Kreiger, in the Harrison Peak area of Boundary County on Friday, July 12 around 6:40 p.m. They also responded to a separate report of a second missing person, Heidi Vanderzee, in the same vicinity.

Search teams located Vanderzee in good condition around 2:14 a.m. on Saturday, July 13. Aerial searches by Two Bear Air and Civil Air Patrol continued throughout Saturday. Ground operations were briefly halted Saturday night due to safety concerns but resumed Sunday morning.

Kreiger was found dead around 10:37 p.m. on July 14, Sunday. Due to rugged terrain, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office air assets were called in to retrieve his remains. The search concluded Sunday evening.
