Corrections officer faces charges for sexual assault of inmate

SPOKANE, Wash. – A lead corrections officer with the Bureau of Indian Affairs faces federal charges for sexual assault of an inmate.

Darren Bowannie, 34, was charged with deprivation of rights under color of law by a federal jury after an incident in February.

Bowannie was a lead corrections officer for the BIA and was responsible for transporting inmates from Wellpinit, to Nespelem, Wash.

On Feb. 9, during a transport Bowannie allegedly threatened and sexually assaulted the person he was transporting.

The FBI is investigating the case and if convicted Bowannie could face life in prison and up to 5 years of supervised release.
