COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Public beaches, the boardwalk and Lake Coeur d’Alene were packed with people on Memorial Day.

“It’s just a beautiful day. It’s very hot and we just thought that swimming would be a good idea,” Aliana Espino, a teenager from Coeur d’Alene, said.

Crowds could be seen throughout waterfront areas throughout the federal holiday.

Iree Muturi and Joyce Kabacho are Kenyan immigrants who live in Spokane who went to Coeur d’Alene Monday to enjoy the tourist activities.

“We went for a cruise, we saw many houses, you know. It’s cool,” Muturi said.

Both added that while Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to summer, they appreciate the importance of Memorial Day and what it means.

“…the history matters to this country. And we are also celebrating the people who really suffered. And we are here celebrating them,” Kabacho said.
