SPOKANE, Wash. – April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The Washington State Patrol (WSP) hopes that greater awareness of the problem will decrease traffic deaths.

WSP has reported 6,601 distracted drivers in 2024 so far. Texting or talking on the phone while driving is a relatively common practice which can yield lethal consequences.

3,522 people were killed due to distracted driving in 2021 according to the US Department of Transportation (DOT).

The DOT asks that drivers pull over if they need to send a text. Using a phone to send a message while driving is illegal for all drivers in Washington State.
