SPOKANE, Wash. — A dog that police said appeared to try to attack a teen and another dog in Spokane’s West Central Neighborhood was euthanized following the incident, police said on Wednesday.

Officers with the Spokane Police Department responded to a caller reporting someone had shot a dog after it attacked a girl and her dog a few blocks west of Dutch Jake’s Park on Wednesday evening.

When officers arrived, they found a dog that had been shot, which they took to an emergency vet.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for the police department said the aggressive dog that was shot was a pit bull and the dog that was attacked was a German Shepard.

Both dogs were taken to an emergency vet by private parties. The police spokesperson said the pit bull was euthanized, and the German Shepard was treated for bite injuries.

Investigators were able to piece together a timeline of the incident.

Police believe a 17-year-old girl was walking her German Shepard near her home on a leash. A pit bull and another large dog came at her as if they were going to attack her.

The Shepard intervened and was attacked by the other dogs, the spokesperson said.

Police said a woman tried to stop the attack but was bit by one of the dogs.

The 17-year old’s father then came out of his house with a handgun. Police believe he attempted first to kick the dogs away, then to shoot near them before ultimately shooting the dog.
