BELLEVUE, Wash.-April is Distracted Driving Month and AAA Washington and Safe Drive Club are launching a “Don’t Drive Distracted” campaign to encourage teens to reduce distractions while driving.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, research shows that when a teen driver has only teen passengers in a vehicle, the fatality rate for people involved in a crash increases by 51 percent.

Safe Drive Club is an online platform to motivate drivers to commit to distraction-free driving founded by Bellevue native Ishika Binu after she was involved in a driving accident.

During Distracted Driving Month, AAA of Washington and Safe Drive Club are hoping to transform the driving culture by making attentive driving the norm with younger drivers, according to a AAA press release.

According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, distracted driving can include many issues behind the wheel, from checking out the scenery to playing with the radio, interacting with passengers or driving with a dog on your lap.

More information on how to identify distracted driving and how to practice safe driving is available through AAA Washington.

Teen drivers are also encouraged to take the online DriveSafe Pledge.
