Downtown Spokane Partnership prepares for NCAA tournament visitors

SPOKANE, Wash. — With just four days until the Drive for the Title comes to Spokane, the Downtown Spokane Partnership (DSP) is gearing up, adding extra patrol at night to complement their ambassador program.

The seven DSP ambassadors go around the streets donning their black and blue shirts, working for the non-profit to keep the downtown area city clean and safe.

“We walk around, be good samaritans. We have vehicle (and) trucks, tools to help people change tires or give them jump starts if needed,” Ambassador Alex Gray said. “We will check on homeless people if they’re blocking doorways, try to get them moving or in the right direction to get them resources if they need.”

According to the DSP’s website, in 2022 ambassadors made 2,383 citizen assists, operating seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. When they’re not patrolling the streets during this tournament season, others will.

“We also have security services extended into the later hours to make sure the fan experience is as good as it can be downtown,” CEO and President Emilie Cameron said.

They’ll also be around to serve as a friendly face for visitors who need help on where to park, what to do and where to eat.

“We’re looking at how we make sure people have parking, hotels, where to eat, where to shop, where to visit, where to play,” Cameron said. “But it’s also about making sure it’s safe and clean.”
