SPOKANE, Wash. – The eastbound I-90 Sprague Lake Safety Rest Area and RV dump have returned to full operation after contractor crews completed repairs to the septic system.
According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), the new lagoon-style septic system is now fully functional, eliminating the need for the portable toilets that had been used at the site since late May.
WSDOT said that the repairs were prompted by a routine inspection earlier this year, during which crews discovered tears in the liner of the existing septic system, leading to a leak. Contractor crews replaced the lagoon liner under a contract and restored service to both the rest area and the RV dump station.
The Sprague Lake facility’s septic system repairs are part of a larger need for maintenance across Washington’s safety rest areas. The 2023 Safety Rest Area Strategic Plan highlighted that WSDOT’s entire rest area system requires significant rehabilitation. The plan estimates that approximately $375 million to $500 million in funding will be needed over the next 15 years to restore, maintain, and upgrade the state’s rest areas.
The Sprague Lake Safety Rest Area and RV dump are located approximately three miles west of the Sprague/State Route 23 interchange at milepost 242.3.
