Egg prices rise again in Spokane, impacting local consumers

SPOKANE, Wash. – Egg prices are on the rise again, affecting consumers in Spokane and Spokane Valley. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that egg prices reached $3.70 in November, marking a significant increase from previous months.

This price is 71% higher than last November and 160% more expensive than five years ago, before the pandemic. According to the Associated Press, the bird flu is a key reason for this spike, with over 111 million birds killed over the last three years, leading to a constrained egg supply.

At three different stores in Spokane and Spokane Valley, the cheapest eggs averaged $4.23 per dozen. This price is hitting consumers hard, with many people saying they aren’t checking the prices because eggs are too essential to their pantry.

One man at Costco mentioned buying five boxes of five dozen eggs for his restaurant. He said that due to his suppliers not being able to provide the eggs needed, Costco was his only option.

Charles Monson, a local resident, shared his experience with rising egg prices. “Egg prices are definitely a lot higher than they were in the past and it’s pretty significant with the amount of eggs my family of five goes through even on just a daily basis,” he said.

The rising cost of eggs is a concern for many in the community, as they continue to navigate these increasing prices.
