Ex-boyfriend arrested in shooting near Mattawa

MATTAWA, Wash. – A shooting between an ex-boyfriend and a current friend ended in an arrest in an orchard near Mattawa.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office said they responded to the 15000 block of Road 25-Southwest early Thursday morning after reports of gunfire. A woman had met a male friend in an orchard when her ex-boyfriend arrived.

An argument ensued between the ex-boyfriend and the male friend. The situation escalated quickly as the ex-boyfriend pulled out a gun and fired several shots. The male friend managed to run into the orchard for safety, and no one was injured.

Authorities used a phone call to contact and convince the suspect to surrender. He was taken into custody at his parents’ house near Mattawa.

The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Juan Castro from Mattawa, was booked into Grant County Jail. He faces charges of investigation of first-degree assault.
