SPOKANE, Wash. – The Ferris High School Cheer Team is celebrating a big victory as they prepare for Nationals in just one week.

The Saxon Cheerleaders brought home their first WIAA State Title, earning an 83.7 in the Game Day COED division against eight other teams. The team earned second in the COED Traditional division with a 75.9.

“This is the first win Ferris Cheer has ever had, so it’s just extra special,” head coach Emily Schutz said.

The team consists of 22 kids, 18 girls and four boys. Of these athletes, 18 are seniors.

After their big win, the Saxons are preparing to compete in Anaheim, California for the USA Spirit Nationals on Feb. 16-18.

“We are so proud of the Spokane cheer culture. The teams truly do cheer for each other at the competitions and at our local games, too,” Schutz said. Every team experiences a lot of the same challenges, and when we see a team put up a cool stunt or put down a cool dance, we cheer for them! That’s hard stuff, and we know it! It’s pretty special to be part of this cheer community.”
