SPOKANE, Wash. – Fire Prevention Week is underway with the theme being “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You!” Smoke alarms play a critical role in early smoke detection, allowing families valuable time to evacuate safely.
The National Fire Protection Association reports that approximately three out of five residential fire fatalities occur in homes lacking working smoke alarms.
In Washington State, 2023 data revealed 40 fire-related deaths in locations where smoke alarms should have been installed. Of these deaths, 82% took place in areas without a smoke alarm or where its presence was unknown.
Fire Prevention Week is the perfect opportunity to highlight the lifesaving impact of smoke alarms. The Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) is urging residents to ensure their smoke alarms are properly installed, routinely tested, and well-maintained.
The SFMO recommends installing smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every home level, including the basement.
Residents should test their alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year or whenever they hear the alarm chirp.
Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. Residents should also consider upgrading to interconnected smoke alarms.
