Fire victims look for support and volunteers to help rebuild their homes

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash, – This weekend marks one year since the Gray and Oregon Road fires took hundreds of houses from families in our community.

This weekend the Medical Lake and Elk communities will be hosting private healing events for victims to support each other, but they are also asking for the public’s help.

The Spokane Region Long Term Recovery Group is looking for anyone who has experience building homes (carpenters, painters, electricians, plumbers, etc), who can do professional work for fire victims, to help those who are running out of resources to support themselves.

Jeanna Swanson with the New Hope Resource Center says not everyone who lost their home had insurance, so the fire literally took everything they had.

She says everyone is at a different place in their recovery from the fires, and anyone who has access to resources that can help should sign up to volunteer.
