Fire-wise your yard this summer season with these helpful tips

SPOKANE, Wash. – Every single year during fire season someone comes home to their house and it’s either still on fire or it’s already burnt down. That’s why Nonstop Local spoke with the city about ways to protect our homes from fires, even when we are not there.

Kristen Zimmer with the city of Spokane’s water department gave the following advice:

Make sure you don’t have any plants touching your house or growing up the side of it. They could potentially spread a fire to your home.Choose the right plants in your garden. Succulents are good because they are dense and filled with water.Don’t use flammable mulch between your plants, use rocks or pebbles instead.Make sure your plants aren’t too close together. Spacing them out can also help prevent a fire from spreading.Pick up dead stuff from your yard, it can quickly become fuel for a fire.

When in doubt, you can also check out the county’s free fire-wise program, where they can give you advice for your specific yard.
