Firefighters prepare for increasing gusts following brief reprieve for LA area

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Firefighters are readying for another round of critical fire weather after calmer than expected winds gave them a much-needed reprieve. They made progress Tuesday on Southern California’s largest blaze and quickly snuffed out several smaller new fires. The National Weather Service has pushed back its dire warning of critical fire weather until early Wednesday. Forecasters warn that the danger is not over. A week after the first fires began, the flames have destroyed thousands of homes and killed at least 25 people. A beefed-up firefighting force is in place to attack flareups or new blazes.
