RENTON, Wash. — A five-year-old boy was attacked by a coyote in a Renton neighborhood and sustained injuries.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) said officers responded to a report of a human-coyote encounter in which the coyote bit the child in the upper body, pulled him to the ground, and attempted to drag him away.

WDFW officials said the boy’s mother was able to rush at the coyote, scaring it off and freeing the child. Fish and Wildlife officers said that they later located the coyote near the incident site and attempted to lethally remove it, but the animal fled into a nearby forest.

WDFW said that the child suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. He was released later that day.
