Former President Trump is first president since Reagan to face violence at rally

WASHINGTON — Former president Donald Trump appeared to be grazed by a bullet during a campaign stop at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday.

US Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi said that Trump was safe via social media after the former president was rushed off stage for medical attention.

“The Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe. This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when available,” Guglielmi said.

The event is being investigated as a shooting by federal authorities

If it is deemed a shooting, it will have been the first assassination attempt on a president since Ronald Reagan was shot outside a Washington D.C. hotel in March of 1981.

Trump’s injury at the Pennsylvania rally occurred in the midst of heightened political tension ahead of the November general election.

The last major string of political violence in the United States occurred between 1963 and 1968, when John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy were each killed by a shooter during a public event.

A string of officials from across the political spectrum released statements condemning the violence after the shooting. For more coverage, check here.
