Former WSU professor sues university over free speech rights and job loss

PULLMAN, Wash. – A former professor is suing Washington State University, claiming the university violated her First and 14th Amendment rights.

Former associate professor Renato Moon filed the lawsuit, alleging the school did not renew her contract after she expressed concerns about the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine during a U.S. Senate roundtable in December 2022.

Moon also claims the university retaliated against her for classroom discussions involving race and gender, which led to complaints from students and a subsequent investigation by the university.

Moon said the loss of her job resulted in the loss of her pension and health insurance and damaged her reputation.

Notably, Moon will be represented by Pete Serrano, who is currently running for Washington State Attorney General.

Both Serrano and the university were contacted but did not offer any comments.
