FWP needs help finding culprits of bull elk poaching near Helena

HELENA, Mont. – Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking assistance to find those responsible for killing a bull elk illegally in Tizer Basin, south of Helena. The incident occurred during the night on September 14, 2024.

FWP reports that the bull elk was killed with a firearm even though it is archery season. The antlers were removed, but the rest of the animal was left and wasted.

The area where the elk was killed, Hunting District 380, is managed by FWP for older bulls and branch-antlered bulls. This specific hunting district is permit-only, making it one of the most challenging permits to draw in the state.

FWP is asking anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward. A cash reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the identification of those responsible.

Authorities hope that community assistance will help solve this case and protect the wildlife management efforts in the area.
