Garbage and recycling collection moves to 6 a.m. in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — Beginning on Jan. 2, City of Spokane residents will be asked to have garbage and recycling ready at the curb by 6 a.m. on their designated collection day.

According to the city, this earlier start time will allow flexibility for workers for changing weather conditions, such as extreme heat and wildfire smoke. The original pick-up time was at 7 a.m. but this earlier start time will go into effect on Jan. 2

This schedule will also apply to food and yard waste carts when service resumes in March.

In a statement released by the city, they say that “the City’s Solid Waste Department employs approximately 120 people and some positions involve significant time outside of the vehicle to move dumpsters, pick up extra garbage and perform equipment inspections.”

The department currently provides curbside collection services for garbage, recycling and yard waste to residents as well as businesses.

If you are not able to get your cart out in time or miss your collection, you can request it be picked up for a return trip fee. To do this, MySpokane 311 has multiple options for requesting a “missed solid waste collection” service:

Self-service online at MySpokane311Self-service through the MySpokane 311 mobile app available for iOS and AndroidCall 311 or (509) 755-2489 if outside City limits
