SPOKANE, Wash. – One family was ripping up the carpet in their south Spokane home when they found some Garland Theater history.

Mid-way through construction they found three Spokesman Review’s and Spokane Daily Chronicle papers from 1952.

What the newspaper revealed, a step back in time, with a headline that read, A Spokane Man Dead in a Plane Crash, it was the fire side addition of the Daily Chronicle, the Spokesman Review evening publication.

It showcased the prices of turkeys from thanksgiving and what was playing on KHQ’s radio station, but it also showed us— the Garland Theaters schedule from 1952.

With the theater set to reopen today Robert and Katrina are hopefully they’ll be able to return their piece of Spokane history to the new owner of the theater.

In 1952 you could see Humphrey Bogart star in “High Sierra,” an earlier showing was of the movie “Smoky,” and it was the last day to see “Leave Her to Heaven.”

There is also a special morning screening of “Carolina Moon.”

The Garland Theater will reopen tonight after briefly closing in early 2023 when the property was sold to its new owners, the reopening event it will feature a Spokane classic, “Benny and Joon,” and tickets are already sold out.
