DETROIT, Mich. – General Motors (GM) is laying off about 1,000 workers worldwide as part of its efforts to cut costs and stay competitive in the global automobile market.
The company, along with other automakers, is navigating the uncertain transition to electric vehicles both in the U.S. and globally. GM is working to determine where to invest capital and how quickly the switch to electric vehicles will occur.
GM faces the challenge of developing and updating gas-powered models while also investing in electric vehicle battery and assembly plants for the next generation of electric vehicles.
The company employs about 150,000 people worldwide, with the largest group located at its technical center in the Detroit suburb of Warren, Michigan.
