SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University announced its first class of Unity Scholars, a group of 19 Washington students focused on social justice leadership.
According to Gonzaga, seven of the students are from Spokane and 12 are first generation college students.
The scholarship aims to form leaders in the Ignatian tradition of servant leadership, which focuses on the dignity of the individual and solidarity with the poor. It is similar to the recently scrapped Sullivan Program at Seattle University, another Jesuit institution in Washington.
Senior Director of Undergraduate Admissions Stephen Keller touted the new program as a win for Gonzaga’s mission as an academic institution with a commitment to social justice.
“The inaugural class of Unity Scholars are people who stand for and with others…They are people who have deep desires to make meaningful contributions to the lives of those around them,” Keller said.
The Unity Scholarship is a four-year full scholarship covering the cost of tuition, fees and housing at Gonzaga.
