Governor Jay Inslee responds to new climate change report

OLYMPIA, Wash. – A new National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) study shows that carbon dioxide is accumulating in the atmosphere at an unprecedented rate. Governor Jay Inslee (D) responded to the report Monday.

“Here’s why climate action is so urgent. We get science in our state and reject climate denial. Our pollution-slashing policies like the Climate Commitment Act also fund electric buses and air filtration for schools, heat pumps for residents, and the green energy transition,” Inslee said.

NOAA explained the danger of increasing greenhouse gas levels when the study results were announced on June 6.

“CO2 acts like a blanket in the atmosphere, preventing heat radiating off of the planet’s surface from escaping into space. The warming atmosphere fuels extreme weather events, such as heat waves, drought and wildfires,” NOAA said.

Inslee, who is leaving the governor’s mansion in early 2025, has touted the Climate Commitment Act as the zenith of his environmental platform while serving as governor.

That platform has gained Washington’s governor national attention amongst Democratic leadership. President Joe Biden has hinted that Inslee could potentially be a climate leader in his administration if he wins a second term.
