PALMDALE, Calif. (AP) — Hakeem Jeffries has said this election is about the economy, and stopping Project 2025 and MAGA extremes. And after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, he says it’s about democracy. Yet Jeffries, who is in line to make history as the first Black speaker of the House if Democrats wrest control, says he is choosing to stay calm. The campaign for control of the House is a toss-up. Jeffries has logged 25,000 miles in 30 states trying to win the majority for Democrats. He is part of a new generation of leaders, taking over after Nancy Pelosi stepped aside.
