Harris calls it a ‘good day’ for democracy as she oversees peaceful certification of Trump’s victory

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris says Jan. 6, 2025, was a “good day” for democracy as she oversaw the peaceful certification of Donald Trump’s victory. In doing so Monday, she joined a short list of other vice presidents who have overseen the confirmation of their own losses. Richard Nixon did it after losing to John F. Kennedy in 1960. Al Gore followed suit when the U.S. Supreme Court tipped the 2000 election to George W. Bush. But no other vice president has held the gavel when Congress certified their loss to a president-elect who refused to concede the previous election and directed his supporters to march on the U.S. Capitol.
