COLUMBIA COUNTY, Wash. — A hiker was rescued from a remote area near Deadman Peak after he broke his leg.
The Spokane Regional Air Support Unit (SRASU) received a request from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office around 2:30 p.m. on June 24. SRASU said a 33-year-old hiker had injured his leg, and because of the terrain, they could not get an ATV to the hiker’s location.
Based on the GPS coordinates and video of the area provided by the victim’s brother, Rescue 3 flew directly to the location of the downed hiker.
First responders surveyed the area for a possible landing site and found the safest option was to bring the helicopter near the ground and offload Helicopter Rescue Medics (HRMs). HRMs began treating the patient and evacuated the area.
The patient was transported to the Walla Walla Regional Airport, where an ambulance was waiting. The man is expected to make a full recovery.
