The new IDOC protocols account for renovations to the ‘execution preparation room’ undertaken this summer to make killings more efficient.

“The condemned person will first be escorted to the execution preparation room…If the medical team leader determines peripheral IV access is not attainable, a qualified physician will establish a central line,” IDOC said in a statement to media outlets.

IDOC Director Josh Tewalt claims that the changes made to the death chamber allow for constitutional executions.

“These changes enhance the State’s ability to carry out an execution by lethal injection by ensuring we have the infrastructure in place to establish IV access,” Tewalt said.

Idaho is one of 21 states actively seeking the death penalty for prisoners according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Despite concerns that the practice is racially discriminatory from civil rights advocates and ethical objections from religious leaders, the US Supreme Court has ruled that the death penalty does not fall under the Eighth Amendment definition of cruel and unusual punishment.
