IDAHO – Idaho posted the highest growth rate in median household income over the past five years, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019-2023 American Community Survey (ACS) data. The state’s median household income increased by 15.5%, surpassing the national rate of 7%.

According to the Idaho Department of Labor, from 2014-2018 to 2019-2023, Idaho’s median household income rose by $10,011, the largest dollar increase in the nation. The national increase during the same period was $5,144. Arizona followed with a 12.3% growth rate, while California saw the second-largest dollar increase at $9,630.

Despite the significant growth, Idaho’s median household income remains below the national median of $78,538, reaching 95% of that figure. The state’s ranking improved from 39th to 30th in the nation for household income, though it still trails most of its neighboring states, with the exception of Montana.

The full ACS data is available on the U.S. Census Bureau website. A summary of statistics will also be included in the Idaho Department of Labor’s workforce trend reports. Regional data can be obtained from Idaho’s labor economists upon request.

The Census Bureau said that they will release 2024 population estimates and components of change for the nation and states on Thursday.
