Idaho’s 2023 crime report released with some counties showing upward trends

MERIDIAN, Idaho – The Idaho State Police released the 2023 crime rates for each county in Idaho, with some showing an upward trend.

The crime ratings are part of statewide crime statistics gathered from local agencies and recorded to show year-over-year changes.

Kootenai County

Kootenai County saw a 4.0% increase in crime in 2023 compared to 2022. The county totaled over 11,000 offenses in 2023, with the largest increase being in crimes against society. The county ranked 5th for crime among all other counties.

Bonner County

Bonner County also saw a small rise in crime, at 3.4%, from 2022 to 2023. In 2022, Bonner County saw a significant drop of -11%, now increasing again. It ranked 15th for crime among all other counties

Benewah County

Benewah County saw a significant drop in crime rates again this year for the second time. It ranked the lowest in crime of northern Idaho counties at 25th against all other counties an only reporting 415 crimes.

Latah County

Latah County saw a larger increase in crime in 2023 at a nearly 9% increase from 2022 t0 2023. The county ranked lower in offense than other counties in northern Idaho with 1,615 offenses putting its standing in the state at 23.

Shoshone County

Shoshone County saw the largest increase in crime for northern Idaho counties, with nearly a 19% increase. The total reported incidents in the county totaled just over 1,100. It received the third slot in crime for its offense rate per 1,000 residents, reaching 77.91.
