SPOKANE, Wash. – The International Rescue Committee (IRC) will host an International Women’s Day Celebration on Friday at the Spokane Public Library.

International Women’s Day is an annual celebration observed on March 8. Governor Jay Inslee has also declared March as Women Making History Month.

The IRC event will focus on refugee and immigrant women who have contributed to Spokane’s culture and leadership.

Speakers will include members of the Lilac City’s refugee and immigrant community, as well as Mayor Lisa Brown.

Earlier this week, the mayor’s office underscored the gender disparity in Spokane commission and board representation, where women only occupy 39 percent of leadership.

Brown is exploring ways of closing that gap with additional pay for commission and board positions, though city council funding has yet to be announced.

Attendees will be offered food from Feast World Kitchen and there will be activities for families. Those interested in attending will be able to enjoy the programming from 10 am to 2pm. There is no cost for attendance.
