MERIDIAN, Idaho — The Idaho State Police (ISP) is celebrating the impact of forensic science during National Forensic Science Week (NFSW) and bringing attention to how forensic science has impacted law enforcement.

According to ISP, this is the seventh year ISP, along with other law enforcement agencies nationwide, has celebrated the contributions forensic science has made to the criminal justice system.

According to ISP, forensic science is necessary in modern-day law enforcement. Forensic science has helped create methods and technology to assist law enforcement in analyzing evidence, exonerating the innocent, identifying suspects and supporting the judicial process.

An education event open to the public will be held during NFSW at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17, at Boise State University. People can attend it in person or online to learn how forensic science helps solve crimes by diving into a case study on the Daralyn Johnson investigation.

Virtual tours of ISP’s laboratories will also be available on YouTube. These videos explain forensic scientists’ processes, from evidence handling to receipt and storage to analysis.

ISP has a comprehensive range of services in Coeur d’Alene, Meridian and Pocatello. These services range from trace evidence, toxicology, firearms, and digital evidence to biology/DNA data. According to the ISP, forensic science is the backbone of crime scene processing and has helped ensure the safety and security of Idaho communities.

The ISP Forensic Services unit has 70 civilian professionals who help law enforcement investigate incidents through analytical expertise and objective testimony.

The advanced technologies and methodologies employed by ISP are integral to solving crimes, and the dedication of our forensic experts is unmatched,” said ISP Lab Systems Director Matthew Gamette in a press release. “Their work ensures that justice is served and our communities are protected.”
