IDAHO — Saturday marked the first day of winter driving classes in North Idaho, preparing more drivers to be as safe as possible on slick roads.

According to the Idaho State Patrol (ISP), the Idaho Transportation Department, along with ISP, the safety classes are free and informative, covering topics that will have drivers ready for winter conditions. Students will learn proper vehicle preparation, equipment, road conditions, crash, and snowplow safety.

According to ISP, these classes are geared toward young drivers who might soon be experiencing their first Idaho winter. ISP also recommended these classes for anyone new to Idaho and not used to driving in the snow. Teens who will be starting driver’s ed are also encouraged to attend.

“Idaho winters may create snowy landscapes and fun outdoor activities, but it’s crucial to recognize the inherent dangers of driving in these conditions,” said ISP on their website. “While winter’s beauty is undeniable, the roads become a challenging terrain, demanding heightened vigilance and extreme care.”

ISP had its first class in Coeur d’Alene on Oct. 5. There will be three more classes in North Idaho:

Oct. 9 in Sandpoint from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.Oct. 19 in Coeur d’Alene from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Oct, 26 in Coeur d’Alene from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

According to ISP, officers responded to over 16,000 weather-related accidents statewide from Oct. 1, 2021, to Apr. 30, 2022. Unsafe driving in snow, ice, or wet conditions can cause fatal results. To be the most prepared in the winter, ISP recommends planning ahead and finding an alternative mode of transportation if you are under the influence.
