SPOKANE, Wash. — After a last-minute write-in campaign, Marcus Riccelli now has an opponent for the upcoming November election.
The Democratic nominee running for the senate seat of retired Andy Billing was originally running unopposed. However, a successful and last-minute write-in campaign secured Republican nominee Jim Wilson as his opponent.
Wilson commented on the sudden decision, saying he never aspired to hold public office, but seeing Riccelli running unopposed in the primary ballot made him angry. Wilson said there needs to be a public discourse because there are two sides to issues.
Wilson’s family members also wrote him in, and shortly after, Wilson received a phone call from the Chair of the Spokane County Republican Party asking him to consider running on an official campaign for the seat. Wilson received a little over 1% needed to appear on the November ballot after agreeing to be an official write-in two weeks before the primary.
